TOPIC: RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And Joseph said unto them the third day, ‘This do, and live; for I fear God’” – Genesis 42:18
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Joseph was now the governor of Egypt. How is that he still feared God?
At age 30, Joseph has become the governor of Egypt. The task before him was enormous. Taxing and storing food for seven years and then distributing that food over a period of seven years till the famine is over. Organizing and executing such a Herculean task required leadership skills. Over the thirteen years he’s been in Egypt, Joseph had served and executed Leadership roles excellently, both in Potiphar’s house and in prison. These little leadership opportunities served to prepare him for the ultimate one, but they also tested his faithfulness.
Remember: “He who is faithful in little things shall be made ruler over many” (Matt 25:21).
In the family today, as well as in the church and in our nations, what is missing is responsible leadership. Men and women who are ready to lead with a profound sense of being responsible to God. It was responsible leadership that distinguished Joseph’s position and success in Egypt from all others. In Potiphar’s house, being the overseer, Joseph reminded his master's wife, “How can I do such great wickedness and sin against God”, when she requested a sexual affair. Further, when Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt, he accused them of being spies to test whether they had repented. Putting them in prison, he requested that they go to bring Benjamin, their youngest brother (Gen 42:15–16). After three days, Joseph was uncomfortable keeping them in prison. He reminded them, “This do and live; for I fear God” (Gen 42:17–18).
Joseph’s leadership was hinged on the fear of God or being accountable to God.
Precious one, power corrupts, but the leader who fears God will be restrained from abusing it. Today, it is common to find husbands and fathers who are abusive to wives and children. Bosses in the workplace who take office materials and office time and use it for personal gain. Similarly, there are church leaders and national leaders who are profiteering with the privilege positions they occupy. If a man has no fear for God, or see himself accountable to God, what regard has he for his fellow man?
Beloved, we were all born to lead. Who are we to lead? Ourselves, most importantly. We have all been given a life to lead.
Whatever we are doing daily with our lives individually is the way we’ve chosen to lead ‘the self’. In the fear of God, lead yourself on the path of righteousness. In public and in private, think and lead as one who is accountable to God. It starts with your commitment to be responsible, and God will give you His help. Remember: We will all appear before the judgment seat of Christ someday, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. God bless you more.
