THEME: LOOK TO JESUS AND LIVE
THEME SCRIPTURE: "Then the LORD said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live." - Numbers 21:8(NKJV)
PREPARATORY QUESTION
1. Why did God choose a model of a fiery snake as a cure for the children of Israel in the wilderness?
Why should Moses make a model of a snake, the very creature that was causing the people to die in the wilderness? They had been bitten by a snake. Do they need the same snake to be well?
Where there is sin, beloved, sin must be crucified to die in our bodies, then we can live unto righteousness.
Hence, on the cross, Jesus became sin for us—the very thing that condemns people—and bore in His body that which brings spiritual death (Rom. 8:3; 2 Cor. 5:21; Gal. 3:13; 1 Pet. 2:22-24).
Moses didn’t hide the bronze snake he made according to the word of the Lord; he lifted it up on a pole and put the pole where everybody could see it! In the same way, our Lord was crucified publicly, outside the city of Jerusalem, and those who hear the gospel can “look to Him” and be saved. “Whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved” (Rom. 10:13).
Yeah, the One who died for us died publicly; we cannot be ashamed to proclaim the message of the gospel publicly.
The uplifted snake was the only cure in the camp of Israel, just as Jesus Christ is the only Savior of sinners in the world (John 14:6; Acts 4:12). Nobody could look at the bronze snake for another person; each dying sinner had to look up for himself or herself. The salvation that Christ alone offers is personal and individual, and each of us must look to Christ by faith.
No matter how hard they tried in the wilderness, no dying Jew could save himself or herself in the wilderness unless by looking up. The only salvation available was what God had graciously provided, and if you rejected it, you died.
Jesus is God's solution for mankind's sins and iniquities. Do not reject your Savior. Look to Him and live.
Imagine the joy in the camp of Israel when the word got out that there was a cure available for everybody! The only people who couldn’t be delivered from death were those who couldn't accept the fact that a bronze snake could be a cure. A snake? For real? Yeah, they refused to look up to God's provision by faith, and together with those who didn’t know that a remedy was available, all died.
How important it is for us to get the good news out that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Tim. 1:15), including you - Jew or Gentile, male or female, educated or uneducated, rich or poor, young or old.
Beloved look to Jesus Christ and live. Be it sin, sickness, or sadness, look to Him. Bondage, burdens, and barrenness look to Him. As you keep beholding Him, death fades out of your life. That is when you begin to live the greater and superior life in Christ.
Remain blessed.
