THEME: THE SACREDNESS OF A PROMISE

THEME SCRIPTURE: "And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?" 2 Samuel 9:1 KJV

PREPARATORY QUESTION:

1. Must we, as Christians, keep all our promises?

We all, at one point in time, have been keepers of a promise. We have made promises to God, to friends and family, or to ourselves. Whenever there is a promise, expectations are raised and certain actions are predicted. In our day, making light of promises is common. Contracts, agreements, covenants, and promises are deemed variable due to changing circumstances. Such that any change in circumstance becomes a valid reason for breaking our promises or forgetting about them.

However, as Christians, promises, covenants, and agreements must be sacred.

This is because God holds dear and sacred His promises to us all. The preacher knowing this admonished, "When you vow a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed." (Ecc 5:4). God regards the one who defers his vow as a fool.

David had made a promise to Jonathan (1 Sam 20:14-15) to show him the kindness of the Lord even when he [Jonathan] died. The circumstances under which this promise was made were not the same as when it was to be kept. When this promise was made, Saul was king, Jonathan was a prince, and David was a threat and a fugitive. When the day came and David remembered his promise to Jonathan, Saul and Jonathan were dead, David was king with all the power of a nation, and all the enemies of David had been cut off from before him.

Yet, David cried out, "Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?"

Mephibosheth was alive but lame in his feet. He was the grandson of Saul. David restored to him all the estate of his grandfather which was rare. Mephibosheth could have been a threat to the sons of David when he was dead, yet he [David] brought Saul's grandson to the palace to eat at his table.

It takes a man who fears God to honor his promise, vow, or agreements.

Beloved, it is easy to make a promise but often it is not easy to keep it. When couples are getting married, it is so easy for them to make their vows to each other. When they have lived together for 6 months, then they begin to wonder if the promises they made can be kept until they die.

Think through your promises before you make them.

Precious one, have you made a marriage covenant? It is sacred; keep it. Have you made an agreement with your company or business partner? It is equally sacred. Keep it. Have you made a vow unto God? Honor it. Your vows and promises are sacred.

God bless you more.
