What is interesting is the fact that it is one thing to receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:8) or the Spirit coming upon you and another thing to be filled with all the fullness of God [the richest measure of the divine Presence, and become a body wholly filled and flooded with God Himself] (Ephesians 3:19).
The Holy Spirit is the fullness of God or Christ. The fullness of God is the completeness or totality of God. When the Holy Spirit comes into our lives we have to decide how much of God’s fullness should fill us. In other words, you are a complete being and the Holy Spirit is the totality of God. When He comes into your life, how much of the totality of God should fill you is a decision you make daily. If a man is filled with all the fullness of God, his words and actions will radiate the presence and power of God. This is why Jesus was baptized with the Holy Spirit yet He prayed daily and for long hours so that He can maintain the fullness of God in Him.

How Can You Ensure the Infilling of the Spirit to the Full?
Ephesians 5:18 – 21 teaches us some ways we can consider to maintain the fullness of God in us to the full. Apostle Paul, by the Spirit, admonishes that, we should not be drunk with wine but rather be filled with the Holy Spirit. He goes on to tell us how we can do this:
- Speaking to yourselves in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19): In other words, speak or sing to yourself [not to another person] because the Holy Spirit is inside of you. Do this by using psalms and hymns. Spiritual songs are songs sung in the language of the Spirit. Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual songs are powerful in helping us yield our minds and our spirit to the Holy Spirit.
- Sing and Make Melody in Your Heart to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19): As you go through the day you can go ahead and be singing songs in your heart or make melody either by humming the Lord’s song. This will keep your spirit welling up to the full.
Never forget – the Holy Spirit loves to be sung to. Practice the habit of singing to the Holy Spirit and you will enjoy His fellowship.
- Giving thanks To God Always For All things (Ephesians 5:20): thanking God all the time as you go about your activities is important to ensuring the infilling of the Spirit. Many activities interfere with our connection and fellowship with God. Some of these include worrying, speaking defeat and negativity, fear, etc. being grateful for everything will ensure that we do not succumb to the cares of this life, the troubles and the fears in this world. Being thankful always will keep us from speaking negatively and this is what the Spirit of God requires to thrive in our lives. Glory to God!

- Submitting Yourselves One to Another (Ephesians 5:20): Submission in the fear of the Lord is key to keeping the activities of the Spirit flowing in your life. Christians are to submit themselves to one another, irrespective of whether they are comfortable or not. God resists the proud. It is pride that can steer us from being submissive as wives, as employees, as church members, as neighbours, as children to our parents, etc. We can’t expect the Holy Spirit of God to fill us while we yield to pride.
- Pray All the Time In the Holy Ghost (Jude 1:20): Praying in the Holy Ghost (or in unknown tongues) has the propensity to build us up in our most holy faith. Pray at all times in the Spirit. Pray in tongues in your car, when you are alone, when you are going for your walk, etc. When you pray in tongues, do not let your mind wander. Let it focus on the Holy Spirit who is in you. Hallelujah!
- Meditate on the Spirit: The communion of the Holy Spirit is powerful in ensuring that we are filled with all the fullness of God. Each day, find time to be alone with the Holy Spirit. Talk to Him. Meditate on Him as you chat and ask Him questions relating to any subject. Be silent to let Him speak back to you. Never forget – solitude is necessary for intimacy and intimacy is necessary for impartation.
