TOPIC: BREAD FROM HEAVEN
THE ME SCRIPTURE: “Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.” — Exodus 16:4
PREPARATORY QUESTION
- Was the manna to the Israelites both bread and a test?
In Exodus 16, the crisis was different from the one at the rock. This time, it was not water but food. Hunger replaced thirst. The wilderness stretched long before them, and fear whispered, What if there isn’t enough?
Interestingly, God responded, not with storehouses or silos of food—but with daily bread which they named "manna", meaning 'what is this'?
Each morning, manna appeared with the dew. It could not be hoarded. It would not last overnight (except before the Sabbath). If kept too long, it spoiled. The lesson was clear: dependence on God was to be daily.
The people had to gather enough for that day.
We often prefer visible abundance over daily reliance. We want assurance for the month, the year, the future. But God frequently works in rhythms that teach trust one sunrise at a time.
Manna fell from heaven but required participation. It did not fall baked and ready on plates. The people had to rise, go out, and gather it. Provision met obedience again.
Notice something profound: the wilderness did not end when the manna began. God sustained them within it. His faithfulness did not always remove uncertainty— but it met it consistently.
Later, Jesus would echo this principle when He taught His disciples to pray for “daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). The prayer assumes a relationship. It assumes provision. It assumes tomorrow will require trust again.
Anxiety asks, Will there be enough by tomorrow? But faith gathers what God has given today.
Sometimes the greater miracle is not abundance— it is consistency. Morning after morning, manna appeared. Quiet. Faithful. Sufficient.
And it was enough.
Key Takeaway
God may not provide all at once—but He provides faithfully, daily, and sufficiently. Again, God did not want the children of Israel to store or save the manna except when it was necessary for the advancement of God's purposes.
Precious one, walk into today looking for the manna. It will be there. And do not save out of fear or concern for tomorrow, but rather for the purpose of God tomorrow.
Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD
- Where am I trying to store up certainty instead of trusting God daily?
- Have I overlooked the “manna” God is already providing?
- What would it look like to trust Him just for today?l
- How might daily dependence deepen my relationship with Him?
PRAYER
Father,
Teach me to trust You for daily provision. Guard my heart from anxiety about tomorrow. Help me recognize what You have already placed before me and give me diligence to gather it faithfully. Form in me a rhythm of dependence that draws me closer to You each day.
Amen.
