TOPIC: THE WORTHY ONE WHO HOLDS YOUR STORY
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals… Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” (Revelation 5:1-5)
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Who is this Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, worthy to open this heavenly scroll?
In John’s vision, the seven-sealed scroll represents God’s sovereign narrative—past, present, and future (Rev 5:1). Like an unopened will, creation groans for its true Heir to claim it (Rom 8:22). The agonizing question—“Who is worthy?”—echoes humanity’s cry for life’s meaning. Philosopher Blaise Pascal admitted, “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the human heart.” Without Christ, history is a locked book; life, a mystery without resolution. The answer of the elder who talked with John shocked heaven: “The Lion of Judah… has triumphed” (Rev 5:5). Yet when John turned, he saw “a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain” (Rev 5:6). Here is the paradox of redemption:
As a Lion, Jesus conquers (Gen 49:9-10); as a Lamb, He atones (Isa 53:7). Only the God-Man, both Creator and Sacrifice, can break the seals. Augustine wrote, “He paid what He did not owe to cancel a debt we could not pay.”
Beloved, why is Christ alone the worthy One to receive the scroll and open the seals thereof?
First, by right—As Judah’s descendant, He holds David’s throne (Matt 1:1-3). Secondly, by redemption—His blood “purchased for God persons from every tribe” (Rev 5:9). And lastly, by resurrection—Death could not keep its prey (Acts 2:24).
In 1944, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, imprisoned for resisting Hitler, wrote: “Only the suffering God can help.”
Like John, he found comfort not in answers but in the Person who holds the scroll.
Months before his execution, Bonhoeffer penned, “In Christ, the question of life’s meaning is not solved—but dissolved in our relationship with Him.”
So, precious one, what is your role in this whole drama?
It is our role to worship Him who sits on the throne. Join the 4 living creatures and the 24 elders in the heavenly chorus (Rev 5:12-13) each day of your life. Remember: the scroll’s owner is also your shepherd (Psa 23:1), and it is also our role to witness. “You will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8). Your story is a footnote in His grand narrative. And lastly, to wait. The Lion is coming; wait prepared. The seventh seal brings judgment and restoration (Revelation 8:1), so wait for Him who is worthy. Put your life into the hands of Him who has the scroll. Trust Him, for without Him, there is no meaning and fulfilment for human life.
Remain blessed.
