TOPIC: The Transfiguration: The Unity Of Scripture
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah…” – Luke 9:29-30
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
1. Why were Moses and Elijah chosen to appear at the Transfiguration, and what do they represent?
One of the pivotal moments in all of scripture happened at the transfiguration. It was a normal day and a simple prayer meeting that was prolonged, which led to the disciples sleeping away – “Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep – Luke 9:32.” It was a divine encounter where the glory of Jesus burst through His humanity, and God, the Father Himself, bore witness to His identity. It was a sacred moment where the law and the prophets did not only find their expression but a glorious convergence. It was a moment of glory and a confirmation of the Messiah’s deity.
Luke observes: “And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white…Luke 9:30.” The change in His face (Mathew 17:2) and appearance was a moment of revelation of His true identity as the only begotten Son of God, establishing His deity as God (Hebrews 1:3).
It was also a moment that foreshadowed the resurrection and the kind of glory Jesus possesses.
His altered body and the presence of Moses and Elijah in glorified bodies were also an encouragement to the disciples on what to expect when Jesus returns to judge the living and the dead.
From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is not a disjointed collection of writings but a unified revelation about God and His redemptive plan for humanity – the Bible was purely inspired by the Holy Spirit.
In Christ Jesus, the scattered pieces of prophecy, law, promise, and history come full circle.
This truth shines brightly on the Mount of Transfiguration, where Moses and Elijah—representing the Law and the Prophets—appear in glory: “and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem – Luke 9:31.” Knowing very well that Moses and Elijah are both towering figures in the Old Testament, their appearance in glory was very significant. We are told that their agenda was on the subject matter of Jesus’ departure – in other words, His exodus that will bring salvation to humanity.
Dearly beloved in Christ, during this Lenten season, with our focus on no other than Christ Jesus, we need to ask that the Holy Spirit awaken us to that consciousness and remove the veil that prevents us from truly seeing who Jesus is. Our knowledge of who He is as the only begotten divine Son of God and in His full deity as God will make it easier to listen to and obey Him. God, in confirming who Jesus is, commands us to listen to Him ( Luke 9:35).
