TOPIC: TRUST IN THE LORD ALWAYS
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And Jesus answered him, saying, ‘It is written, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God’.” – Luke 4:4
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- How are we to live by every word of God?
In The Preaching Event, John Claypool recounts a touching tale of identical twin brothers who never married. They felt marriage was not necessary because they enjoyed each other's company. After their father's death, they jointly ran his business peacefully and joyfully. One day, a man came to make a purchase and paid for it with a dollar bill. After taking the cash, the brother put it on the register and walked the customer to his car. Returning to the cash register, the dollar was gone. He asked his twin brother if he took the dollar bill. His brother responded, "No, I didn’t.” When he brought it up again a few hours later, his brother got angry and said, "I did not take that dollar bill, please!" The conversation ended, but mistrust between the brothers grew until they had to partition the business. They never spoke to each other for twenty years. It didn’t end there. One day, a stranger entered one of the brothers' store. "Is this the business of the inseparable twin brothers?" “Yes, but now separated,” was the replied. The stranger went on to say that twenty years ago, he passed through this town as a drifter. Hungry and having no money, he sneaked in and took a dollar bill on a cash register. Now born again, he has returned to pay back what he stole with interest. This old man began to weep. He silently invited the stranger to his twin brother's next store to tell him the story. He did, and he also wept.
The stranger was forgiven, and the brothers were reconciled. But they learned one thing—their relationship broke because of mistrust.
Mistrust was man's first sin against God, beloved. God spoke to Adam. Adam and his wife heard a different story from the devil. Man was caught between who to believe. Adam and his wife trusted the devil, and their suffering began. In Jesus’ temptation, the devil sought to get Jesus to break trust and dependence on God. Using scripture, Jesus defeated the enemy's subtle strategy. By telling Jesus to turn stones into bread if He was the son of God, he was tempting Him to consider who He was, and to see His fasting (dependence on God) as irrelevant. But Jesus' reply was remarkable. He reminded the devil how man’s survival does not hinge on bread alone but also reliance on God’s word (Deut 8:3).
Precious one, how much do you trust and rely on God’s word for your daily living? How rich is the word of God in your spirit?
Trusting and walking in God's word is the way to live it. It takes faith to put your trust and confidence in God and His word. Sometimes when the going gets tough, such that the dusty roads of life make you cough, we may be tempted to think that God has abandoned us or that what we have believed all this while may not be true. That is not the case, beloved. “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burnt, nor shall the flame kindle upon you,” says the Lord. So, trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, and He will direct and bring you to the superior place. Remain blessed.
