TOPIC: FACING OPPOSITION
THEME SCRIPTURE: “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble..” — Psalm 46:1 NKJV
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- How does it play out if God is a very present help in times of trouble?
As soon as the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls began, opposition erupted against Nehemiah and God's people. Sanballat mocked, Tobiah ridiculed, and the surrounding nations conspired to stop the work.
Whenever God stirs a rebuilding, resistance rises. The enemy laughs first, then threatens. But Nehemiah teaches us that opposition is not a sign to retreat—it is often confirmation that the work matters.
Instead of collapsing under pressure, Nehemiah responded with a beautiful integration of prayer and strategy. Scripture says, “Nevertheless, we made our prayer to our God, and because of them we set a watch.” He did not choose between the spiritual and the practical. He held a sword in one hand and a trowel in the other.
Beloved, the fathers of the Church understood this balance well. Athanasius wrote, “Faith is perfected by struggle,” meaning faith grows precisely when tested by resistance.
When discouragement spread among the workers—“The strength of the laborers is failing”—Nehemiah did not dismiss their fear. He confronted it with truth.
Nehemiah rose and said, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, great and awesome.”
Nehemiah rooted their courage not in their stamina but in God’s character. Gregory the Great captured this dynamic when he wrote, “What appears impossible to us is entirely possible when God is remembered.” Thus, memory becomes a weapon.
Nehemiah also re-centered them on purpose: they were fighting for “your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”
Rebuilding is never just about stones—it is about people, legacy, and the testimony of God in a watching world.
You, too, may encounter resistance as you step into God’s rebuilding work in your life, church, or community. The question is: "Practically, how can the child of God rise up to conquer opposition?"
- Name the Opposition — Identify the voices, fears, or obstacles resisting your rebuilding work.
- Pray Immediately — Follow Nehemiah’s pattern: respond to resistance with prayer before action.
- Strengthen Your Guard — Set a spiritual or practical “watch”: boundaries, accountability, planning, or support. So that there is no occasion for the enemy.
- Remember the Lord — Rehearse God’s faithfulness; declare His promises aloud to yourself.
- Re-anchor in Purpose — Ask: Who benefits if I persevere? What kingdom outcome am I fighting for?
Beloved in Christ, criticism, self-doubt, spiritual push-back, or practical obstacles may surface against your rebuilding efforts. Remember that opposition does not mean God has abandoned the project; often, it means He has joined it.
Psalm 46:1 declares, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” “Very present” means God stands within the tension, not outside it. He strengthens not by removing pressure but by empowering perseverance.
