TOPIC: WHY, LORD?
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Why have you brought all this trouble on your own people, Lord? Why did you send me?” – Exodus 5:22 (NLT)
PREPARATORY QUESTION
1. Why does God allow pain into our situations when He is with us on the journey?
Moses obeyed God—and everything unraveled. Instead of freedom, Pharaoh doubled down. The Israelites were beaten, demoralized, and angry. Moses stood bewildered before the Lord God and asked the hard question we all ask when obedience leads to pain: Why?
We often expect that when we follow God, the path will smooth out. But Exodus 5 reminds us that obedience can provoke opposition before it brings a breakthrough. Theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote from a Nazi prison, “When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die”.
Sometimes that “death” which God bids a man He calls to come into is the collapse of his expectations, comfort, or reputation.
When God sends Moses, He doesn’t promise immediate success— He promises presence (Exodus 3:12). Moses had the mission, but not the full picture. In fact, God’s plan required Pharaoh’s resistance. Through it, the depth of Egypt’s cruelty would be exposed and God’s glory revealed (Exodus 7:5). Without the increased suffering, the people might have settled for partial freedom. God was after total deliverance.
Precious one, if obedience has made your life harder, you may be more aligned with God's plan than you realize.
Gregory the Great once wrote, “Divine justice permits even the good to suffer… that virtue may be tested and the reward greater.”
Pain doesn’t mean you're lost—it may mean you’re on holy ground. If you're on holy grounds, what are you to do, to remain faithful unto the end?
- Bring your honest questions to God. Moses did. God can handle your raw prayers (Psalm 13).
- Hold God to His character, not your timeline. When outcomes disappoint, recall His promises (Isaiah 55:8–9).
- Stay faithful in the fog. Your clarity will return, but your faith is proven in the waiting.
- Encourage others who are discouraged by obedience. Be the voice that says to others, “God sees. Let's hold on.”
Faithfulness isn’t proven by ease— it’s proven in the fire. Stay with God in the hard places. He’s not punishing you; He’s positioning you for greater glory.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD
- Have you ever obeyed God and faced unexpected hardship as a result? What did it teach you?
- Are you currently in a place where God’s plan feels confusing or painful?
- What would it look like to trust God right now, even without answers?
PRAYER
Father, when I obey and things seem to fall apart, help me to trust that You are still at work. Teach me to see beyond the immediate and trust the eternal. Give me the faith to walk through confusion with courage and to wait on Your deliverance without bitterness. Help me believe, even when I can’t yet see, that You are still leading me to freedom. In Jesus' precious name. Amen
