TOPIC: THE 6TH SEAL: WHEN HEAVEN’S POWERS ARE SHAKEN
THEME SCRIPTURE: “ I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.” (Revelation 6:12-14)
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What happened when the Lamb of God opened the sixth seal?
On November 1, 1755, the Lisbon Earthquake shattered Europe’s illusions of stability. Tens of thousands perished as cathedrals crumbled and fires raged. Philosophers like Voltaire scoffed at divine justice, but John Wesley saw deeper meaning: “God shakes the earth to awaken sleeping souls.”
Jesus’ warning in Matthew 24:29: “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken” is no metaphor. It’s a preview of creation’s final rebellion against its Creator.
When the Lamb who was slain opened the sixth seal, John looked and saw the convulsion of creation, as Jesus had mentioned to His disciples. The darkened sun, blood-red moon, and falling stars are not arbitrary terrors. They are creation’s “labor pains” (Romans 8:22), signaling the death throes of a fallen world.
Augustine wrote, “The earthly city glories in itself; the Heavenly City glories in the Lord.” When systems we idolize—governments, economies, technologies—collapse, God dismantles our false sanctuaries to reveal His unshakable kingdom (Hebrews 12:28).
Beloved, difficult times lie ahead, and it is important that we remain unshaken even now and then. And how are we going to do that?
First, let us anchor in His sovereignty. The Christ who walked on stormy seas (Mark 4:39) governs earthquakes. “There’s no ‘natural’ disaster in a supernatural world,” said C.S. Lewis. Trust His rule in your life. Also, live with eternal urgency, store treasures in heaven (Matt 6:20).
Jim Elliot, martyred in 1956, wrote, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep that he might gain what he can keep.”
Lastly, proclaim without fear. As stars fall, souls hang in the balance. We must win them at all cost. “Preach the Word; be ready in season and out” (2 Tim 4:2).
God sent his angel to testify these things unto John so that we might live a prepared life. Beloved, live prepared because the end of all things is near. To every darkness, there is a dawn. Jesus added: “Then… the Son of Man will appear… with power and great glory” (Matt 24:30). The shaking isn’t destruction—it’s delivery. Just as a mother’s pain precedes life, creation’s agony heralds rebirth.
Lift your head, you who are His faithful. Your redemption is near.
