TOPIC: I Am The Bread Of Life
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst." – John 6:35
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Who is the Bread of Life?
- What does the Bread of Life offer?
At the heart of human existence lies a deep longing for food, water, and shelter — the most basic provisions that sustain life and ensure our survival. We invest so much energy in labor so we can provide for ourselves and our dependents. While it is never wrong to strive for these and a better life on earth, the pursuit of these necessities without the right perspective can become a huge distraction from the deeper longings of the soul.
Jesus instructs: “Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal – John 6:27.”
Here, Jesus does not dismiss our daily needs but rather invites us to see beyond the material and the temporal. He invites us to look to Him as the ultimate provider for the deeper longings of the soul that run into eternity.
Today’s scripture context highlights the significance and importance of food in human life. John details the miracle of feeding five thousand men with only five loaves of bread and two fish, and in addition, gathering twelve baskets full of the fragments. To the crowd, they have found a means to ensure they enjoy food. They left all means of work to follow Jesus for bread and fish – to them, they found the Miracle Worker who could provide one of the most important variables to human existence, food/bread.
In their discussions with Jesus, the crowd referenced the provision of bread (manna) to their forefathers in the wilderness on their journey to the Promised Land – Exodus 16. This was when Jesus sought to clarify the fact that it was not Moses who gave them the bread but his Father.
He uses the present tense to affirm that “…but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven – John 6:32.”
He goes further to clarify that the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. He here personifies the bread – and that is himself.
Beloved in Christ, Jesus here sought to elevate the discourse to having the bread of life over having bread to satisfy physical hunger.
He zeroes in on revealing to the crowd, and by extension all of us, that he is the Bread of Life who goes beyond fulfilling our physical hunger to providing life to fulfill the deeper longings of the soul and our eternal need. He came down from the Father and has in Him all that it takes to satisfy us with life that is eternal.
Dearly beloved, in our reflections during the Lenten season and in focusing on Christ Jesus, while we pursue every good means to ensure there is food on the table, we must never forget that it is temporal. It will be sad to attain the necessities of life and not have the Bread of Life in our lives. Jesus, the Bread of Life, has in him the power to offer life in its fullness extending to eternity. In all your pursuits, make sure that through the grace and goodness of God in Jesus, you possess for yourself the Bread of Life. Beloved, the devil may try to entice and ensure you are so much preoccupied with the pursuit of physical bread to the detriment of the Bread of Life, never forget that Jesus “…came that they may have life and have it abundantly – John 10:10.” Hallelujah!
