TOPIC: O, MAN
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”– Genesis 2:7
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Why is God so interested in man who was formed from mere dust?
It is always beautiful reading the account of creation and earth’s reconstruction in the Book of Genesis. God sets out to reconstruct the broken earth, which was formless, void and full of darkness (Gen 1:2). When God created the perfect earth (Gen 1:1), not much is recoded in the Bible how long it took before Satan was cast upon it, destroying everything in it. Hence, theologians believe that millions of years must have passed before Satan’s rebellion and fall.
God reconstructed the earth and gave it to a reagent to rule it.
During the reconstruction process, God spoke into being the firmament, the birds of the sky, the beast of the field and the fishes of the sea. But man, God bent down, took the dust of the earth and formed him in His image. He knelt and breathed into his nostrils and this lifeless dust-man became a living soul (Gen 2:7). Angels might have been awed by the sight of this. The simplicity of this description of man’s creation has been body-guarded by complex theories and dissertations, being products of man’s incessant search for discovery of everything including himself.
Man, like the created animals came from the dust. But unlike the animals, man was formed.
The brilliant question to ask is this, “How did this dust-man rise from the ashes of the earth to become so complex and wonderful a creature?” The answer is not in evolution; not at all. From the nineteenth century when the theory of evolution found its way into the discussion on the origin of species, the debate has perpetuated. The debate on how mankind came from dust to be as brilliant as Einstein, creative as Mozart and as beautiful as Helen of Troy should not be allowed to obscure the simple truth that man was created and it happened by the masterly hand of one who is called God.
O, man—the created one who has been touched by the hand of God is so fearfully and wonderfully made that the quest to understand his makeup still baffles modern minds.
Examine yourself beloved and wonder. From mere dust, daughters were born to men and the sons of God could not resist but to be tempted (Gen 6:1-3). Dust may be mere but when God’s hand touches it, it’s not the same again. Man may have been created from dust but he’s no ordinary.
O, man—the created one who has the breathe of God.
"And God breathe into man’s nostrils the breath of life and he became a living soul”. This brings us to the origin of life. Where did life come from? Can man create life? Can man give life? The One who gave mankind life is the only one who assuredly said to man, “In the day that you eat [of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil] thereof you shall surely die” (Gen 2:17). Evidently when Jesus [God in flesh] stepped into our realm, He raised the dead [or gave life again to the dead]. He also laid down His life and took it again.
Precious one, as you face a new year, you are assured that so many things will happen. But the critical question for your reflection is this: “What manner of person do I see myself to be?” Do you see yourself as dust [hopeless, useless, and incapable] or as one who has been touched by God [empowered to be fruitful, to multiply, replenishing the earth and to subdue it]? Do you see yourself as God’s reagent on earth or servant of nature and victim of circumstances?
It did not end there, beloved. Not only have you been touched by God and received His breathe but also He has chosen to tabernacle Himself in you.
From the day His Holy Spirit came to dwell in you, God’s resident address changed. You became His resident address. Throughout the year, how can you be less than bold? How can you be afraid of what man can do? How can you be less than audacious? He lives in you so you can face tomorrow and the entire year ahead of you. Glory to God!
