TOPIC: OTHER BENEFITS OF THE NEW BIRTH
THEME SCRIPTURE: “To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fades away, reserved in heaven for you. Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time” – 1 Peter 1:4-5
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Do we have an inheritance in Christ?
- Are believers kept by the power of God?
Nicodemus, meeting Jesus at night, was introduced to the solution every man needs – the new birth. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”, Jesus said (John 3:3). It was a solution old Nicodemus struggled to grasp. The new birth provides the sinner to be transformed into a saint. The new life brings us into a union with God, securing in the believer an eternal life (the life of God) which is indestructible. But there are other fringe benefits to the new life in Christ Jesus, and Apostle Peter sets out to point some of them to all believers.
The benefit of a heavenly inheritance (1 Peter 1:4).
The new life guarantees the believer a heavenly inheritance. This heavenly inheritance has several characteristics- it is incorruptible and indestructible, undefiled and unfading. The Italian High Renaissance artist, Leonardo da Vinci, created The Last Supper (a mural painting) in 1498. This masterpiece had to undergo restoration of some of the colors because of fading. But our inheritance in Christ never fades, neither is it destructible. This inheritance is reserved (guarded) forever in the heavenly realm for us.
The benefit of being kept by the power of God (1 Peter 1:5).
This is a wonderful benefit that comes with the new life in Christ Jesus. To be kept by the power of God, as used in the theme scripture, signifies “being shielded by the power of God.” This benefit is not in the future; it is a present-day reality. We are made perfect in one as Christ dwells in us and God in Him (John 17:23). Through our faith, this mighty power of God constantly guards us for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Precious One, our new life is an asset we cannot play with.
The heritage we have received as a result of our union with Christ is huge. Let us therefore walk circumspectly, not as fools (Eph 5:15), as Esau who for one morsel of bread sold his birthright. Rather, let us abstain from all pollutions of the world, following after righteousness, faith, charity, and peace with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. God bless you more
