TOPIC:CITIZENS OF HEAVEN

THEME SCRIPTURE: “But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” — Philippians 3:20 (NIV)

 

Preparatory Question

1. What does your daily life reveal about where your true citizenship and allegiance lie—earthly kingdoms or the Kingdom of God?

 

 

We live in the tension of two realities — between the thrones of earth and the throne of heaven, between the kingdoms that rise and fall and the Kingdom that endures forever. As Paul reminds the Philippians, our true identity is not rooted in Rome, Babylon, America, Ghana or any earthly power. Our citizenship is in heaven.

This truth reframes how we live in the present. The early Christians were not insulated from political turmoil or cultural decay — they lived in the midst of it. Yet they were never confused about where their deepest allegiance lay.

 As Tertullian declared, “The world hates the Christians, not because they have done wrong, but because they are living apart in spirit from its ways.”

To live as citizens of heaven is to walk a narrow road. We do not flee the world, nor are we absorbed by it. We represent a Kingdom not of this world, ambassadors of the coming King. We live with hope, but not illusion. We honor earthly authorities, but we do not idolize them. We work for justice and mercy, not to preserve power, but to reflect our King.

Paul says we are not just waiting for a Savior — we are eagerly awaiting. This eager expectation is not passive or escapist. It means we live with holy anticipation, actively aligning our lives with the coming reality of Christ’s reign. 

The King is returning — and He will not only make all things right but make us right, transforming our frail bodies into glory.

This is the posture of the faithful: to live in the now with our eyes fixed on the forever.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, my King and Saviour, thank You for granting me a heavenly citizenship. While I live among the kingdoms of men, anchor my heart in Your reign. Teach me to wait eagerly and live faithfully. Let my hope shape my witness, and may my life point others to the throne that will never fall. Transform me, Lord, until I reflect Your glory, in Jesus’ precious name. Amen!
