TOPIC: GIVING BEYOND OBLIGATION

THEME SCRIPTURE: “Out of the spoils won in battles did they dedicate to maintain the house of the Lord. [28] And all that Samuel the seer, and Saul the son of Kish, and Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah, had dedicated; and whosoever had dedicated any thing, it was under the hand of Shelomith, and of his brethren.” — 1 Chronicles 26:27-28 KJV

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

  1. What made Samuel, Saul, David, and the armies of Israel dedicate a portion of their spoil to the Lord and the building of His temple?

The treasuries of the house of God were not filled by accident. They were entrusted to faithful Levites and supplied by leaders who understood that what they possessed was never truly theirs. David’s commanders had earned their plunder through discipline, risk, and sacrifice. No law required them to give it away. Yet they freely dedicated a portion to the work of God, not out of pressure, but out of devotion.

This passage confronts a subtle temptation: to give just enough to feel responsible, but not enough to feel it. Token giving is safe. It costs little and asks nothing of our trust.

But beloved, joyful giving—real giving— always stretches us. It reveals what we value and whom we ultimately serve.

John Chrysostom observed, “The mark of a cheerful giver is this: not how much he gives, but with what mind he gives it.” The officers under David gave from the spoils of victory, acknowledging that the victory itself came from the Lord.

The generosity of Samuel, Saul, David, and the army was their worship. With their material gains, they expressed deep love to God.

The text also highlights preparation and stewardship. David organized the treasuries carefully, appointing leaders and establishing systems that would bless the next generation. Generosity was not chaotic or sentimental; it was intentional. According to Augustine, “God does not ask you to give what you do not have, but what you have and love dearly that might ensnare your heart.”

Our giving today—of money, time, or attention—prepares a way for those who come after us. It also reveals whether we see God’s work as a burden to support or a joy to invest in.

When giving flows from love rather than obligation, it becomes an act of rejoicing.

Precious one, ask yourself: What kind of need in the house of God moves me beyond my convenience? Where am I merely tipping God instead of trusting Him? The call of this passage is not to guilt, but to freedom— the freedom of releasing what was never meant to own us.

Key Takeaway

God delights not in reluctant gifts, but in offerings that flow from gratitude, faith, and love.

Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD

1. What cause or need stirs my generosity most deeply, and why?

2. Do I give primarily out of duty, or out of gratitude for what God has done?

3. Do I see that my giving today is preparing the way for others tomorrow?

PRAYER

Lord, everything I have comes from You. Free me from fearful or minimal giving. Teach me to give with joy, wisdom, and trust, that my generosity may reflect my love for You, and strengthen Your work in the world.  In Jesus’ precious name. Amen.
