TOPIC: HEARING THE SHEPHERD'S VOICE

THEME SCRIPTURE: “He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out... they follow him because they recognise his voice.” — John 10:2–4

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

1. Does it mean that those who hear God's voice are His true sheep?

In a world saturated with noise, opinions, and distractions, how do we discern the one voice that truly matters? Jesus presents Himself as the Good Shepherd—one who calls His sheep by name and leads them gently, not by force, but through relationship and recognition.

The key phrase in this passage is “they recognise his voice.” This is not automatic; it is cultivated. Sheep learn the shepherd’s voice by daily proximity. The same is true for us.

The more consistently we draw near to Christ in His Word, in prayer, and in stillness, the more confident we become in distinguishing His voice from others.

E.M. Bounds wrote, “The Christian life rooted in the secret place where God meets and walks and talks with his own grows into such a testimony of Divine power…” The secret place—our personal, undistracted time with Jesus—is where voice recognition deepens. It’s here that our spiritual ears are trained.

Beloved, from today, if we are going to grow in recognising God's voice, then we must:

  1. Daily Word Intake – Spend unhurried time in Scripture. This is where His voice is anchored.
  2. Stillness and Listening– Pause in prayer, not just to speak but to hear.
  3. Obedience – The more we obey what we’ve heard, the clearer His voice becomes.
  4. Discernment through Community– Test impressions with mature believers.
  5. Avoiding Noise – Limit the input of distracting or spiritually dulling voices.

Precious One, the enemy will mimic, the world will distract, and the flesh will demand. But intimacy with Jesus creates clarity. The Shepherd never drives—He leads. He walks ahead, and we are safe to follow because we know Him.

Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:

1. Do I truly recognise the voice of Jesus in my daily life?

2. What voices am I allowing to compete with His?

3. What does my time in the secret place currently look like?

PRAYER

Shepherd of my soul, teach me to hear Your voice above all others. Help me cultivate nearness, so that Your whisper becomes unmistakable. Quiet the competing voices, and give me the courage to follow wherever You lead. Lead me not only in extraordinary moments, but in every ordinary step. In Jesus’  precious name, Amen.
