TOPIC: WHEN GOD GIVES THEM OVER (Pt 1)
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity... They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.” —Romans 1:24–25 (NIV)
PREPARATORY QUESTION
- Why will God give men over to their sinful desires when they are no longer heeding His restraint?
When truth is persistently rejected, God eventually gives people over to their desires— not as an act of abandonment but as a solemn judgment. Paul describes this terrifying moment: humanity chose the lie over the truth, and God allowed them to follow the path they so desperately wanted.
This is not just a warning for the ancient world; it is a warning for us today. When a person or society continually resists God, exchanging His truth for their own ideologies, philosophies, and pleasures, the judgment of God is not always fire from heaven—it is often His silence, and removal of His restraint. It is His way of saying: “Have it your way.”
John Chrysostom, the early church father, said, “Nothing is more wretched than a man who is wise in his own conceit, and who is left without the guidance of God.”
To be given over to one’s own sinful desires is the loss of restraint and the dimming of light. It is then that all forms of sexual orientations and perversions explode in our hearts and faces. The consequences? Daming!
But hope remains. Christ came not just to warn but to redeem. He invites us back from the lies we’ve embraced to the truth that sets us free (John 8:32).
The gospel confronts our idolatry and purifies our worship— restoring us to the worship of the Creator rather than the creation
If you are walking in righteousness, let this passage deepen your gratitude and renew your resolve to walk in the truth. If you’ve wandered, hear the invitation of grace today: God is calling you back before sin takes you further than you intended to go. Today, if you are reading this devotional, don't harden your heart. All it takes is surrender, and your transformation would be evident to all.
God bless you more.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD
- Are there areas in my life where I’ve exchanged God’s truth for a cultural lie?
- Have I begun to serve created things—pleasure, status, possessions—over the Creator?
- How can I renew my worship and realign my desires to God’s truth today?
PRAYER
Gracious Father, I confess that my heart often drifts toward lesser things. Forgive me for the times I’ve exchanged Your truth for the lies of this world. Deliver me from impurity and idolatry. Restore in me a heart that worships You alone. I confess that Your Spirit is guiding me back to truth, holiness, and joy in Your presence. Keep me from ever being “given over.” In Jesus’ precious name. Amen.
