TOPIC: PROFESSING WISDOM, LIVING IN FOLLY
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” —Romans 1:22 (KJV)
PREPARATORY QUESTION
- Is it possible to parade yourself as a wise man and yet not know that you're living as a fool?
There is a tragic irony in human pride. When people reject God as the source of truth and wisdom, they do not become independent thinkers—they become self-deceived. Paul’s words strike deeply: “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” It is not ignorance that leads to foolishness, but the rejection of God’s wisdom while clinging to one's own.
Throughout history and even today, we see this unfold in culture, politics, academia, and even personal lives. People exchange eternal truth for temporary trends.
G.K. Chesterton observed, “When men choose not to believe in God, they do not thereafter believe in nothing. They then become capable of believing in anything.”
True wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 9:10). When a man is not moved by God or the things of God, he's lost it. Wisdom is not merely intellectual sharpness— it is moral alignment with God's truth. When people suppress the truth (Romans 1:18), their reasoning becomes darkened, and their morality is turned upside down. They begin to call evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20).
But the believer is called to live by a different standard. To walk humbly with God, to seek truth, and to be transformed by the renewing of the mind (Romans 12:2).
See, a life anchored in God’s Word is not only wise—it becomes a light to those still walking in deception. As Augustine once said, “The wisdom of what man calls ‘wise’ is often the height of madness in the eyes of God.”
Let us not be caught in the snare of self-reliance masked as wisdom. Let us pursue the wisdom that comes from above—pure, peace-loving, gentle, and full of mercy (James 3:17).
Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD
- In what areas of my life am I trusting my own wisdom more than God's truth?
- Have I absorbed worldly thinking that masquerades as wisdom but leads away from God?
- How can I cultivate humility and grow in godly wisdom this week?
PRAYER
Lord of all wisdom, I confess that too often I’ve trusted in my own understanding instead of leaning on Yours. Deliver me from the false confidence of worldly wisdom. Give me a heart that fears You and seeks Your truth above all else. Help me to live with discernment and walk humbly in Your light. From today, dear Lord, my life is reflecting Your wisdom, not my pride. In Jesus’ precious name. Amen.
