TOPIC: WHEN GOD COMES DOWN
THEME SCRIPTURE: "Oh, that you would burst from the heavens and come down! ... For since the world began, no ear has heard and no eye has seen a God like you, who works for those who wait for him!"— Isaiah 64:1, 4 (NLT)
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Who is God to you personally?
- How powerful is he to deserve your confidence?
Isaiah’s cry is one of holy longing— for God to come down and intervene with power that shakes mountains and melts hearts. It’s a prayer from a people overwhelmed by spiritual decline, national chaos, and personal guilt. And yet, Isaiah doesn’t give up. He remembers who God is: the God who works for those who wait for Him.
The language of Isaiah 64 is not merely poetic— it is prophetic.
Yeah, Isaiah 64 speaks of a God who has already come down in glory on Mount Sinai (Exodus 19), and who would ultimately come down in the Person of Jesus Christ (John 1:14). And still today, God comes down—into the darkness of our sins, despair, and weaknesses—to do awesome things beyond our expectations.
But there’s a condition: waiting. This is not passive resignation. Waiting is faith-in-action—standing, hoping, and praying in anticipation of God’s move. It’s the posture of those who know that nothing in this world compares to the One who works on their behalf.
Church father Augustine once said, “God is always trying to give good things to us, but our hands are too full to receive them.”
Waiting empties our hands. It prepares us to receive when God shows up—often suddenly, often differently than we expect, but always gloriously.
Anne Ortlund reminds us of the need to live in holy awe —fearing sin not out of legalism, but out of love. When you wait in holy expectation, your life becomes fertile ground for divine visitation.
Precious One, if you feel like giving up, remember: no eye has seen, and no ear has heard what God has prepared for those who wait. He is still the God who comes down.
Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD
1. Are you waiting on God with expectation or with resignation?
2. What “mountain” in your life needs the quaking power of God’s presence today?
PRAYER
Lord God, You are the One who rends the heavens and descends in power and mercy. Forgive me for the times I’ve grown impatient or stopped expecting You to move. Quake the mountains in my life—shake the dust off my soul. Revive my awe of You, and help me to wait with faith, not fear. Come down, Lord—again and again. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
