THEME: THE JOY OF A CLEAN RECORD

THEME SCRIPTURE: “Just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works: ‘Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.’”  - Romans 4:6–8 (NKJV)

PREPARATORY QUESTION

1. Is it possible for a man to have a clean record before God?

David, a man who knew both the depths of sin and the mercy of God, gives voice to one of the greatest joys in the Christian life: the blessing of undeserved righteousness. He doesn't celebrate his moral achievements—he celebrates divine mercy.

“Blessed is the one... to whom the Lord does not impute sin.”

To impute means “to credit” or “to count.” By nature, our sins are counted against us. But in Christ, they are counted no more. Instead, righteousness—His righteousness—is credited to us. This is not spiritual accounting fiction. This is the power of the gospel.

John Calvin explained it clearly: “Christ’s righteousness is not in us, but in Christ. We are made partakers of it by the Holy Spirit, only because it is freely imputed to us.”

That’s why David called such a person “blessed.” Not because they earned a spotless record—but because God wiped theirs clean and wrote Christ’s record in its place.

This brings true freedom. You are not defined by your past. You are not measured by your moral consistency. You are marked by Christ. When God looks at you, He sees His Son’s perfection.

But this blessing is not for the self-righteous—it’s for those who acknowledge their sin and throw themselves upon grace. The righteous don’t hide their past; they testify of mercy.

Augustine, who lived a reckless early life before encountering Christ, once said, “God has promised forgiveness to your repentance, but He has not promised tomorrow to your procrastination.”

The time to receive this righteousness is now.

Yeah, beloved, whether you are a prodigal or a stranger, Jesus' righteousness awaits the man who truly desires a clean record freely. If you are the one, today ask Him and receive His righteousness.

Remain blessed.

QUESTION TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD

1. Do I live with the joy of knowing my sins are not counted against me?

2. Am I trusting in works or resting in the righteousness credited by grace?

3. How does this truth free me to worship and serve with boldness?

PRAYER

Gracious Lord,  thank you for not counting my sins against me.  Thank You for crediting me with righteousness I did not earn.  Help me live each day in joyful freedom, not under guilt, but under grace. Let my life reflect the blessing of being truly forgiven.  In Jesus’ name,  Amen.
