THEME: THE LIE OF BEING ‘GOOD ENOUGH’
THEME SCRIPTURE: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” —Proverbs 14:12 (ESV)
PREPARATORY QUESTION
1. What way can seem alright with man but will ultimately bring him to his destruction?
It is interesting to note that many people rest their eternity on a tragic myth: “I’m a good person, so God will let me into heaven.” But Scripture doesn’t weigh our life on a scale of good versus bad deeds. It draws a hard line: Are you in Christ or not? Outside of Christ, no one is good—not even one (Rom 3:10). Yeah, being good is not necessarily being godly. Being kind, honest, or helpful doesn’t erase sin.
The stain of sin isn’t removed by effort, but by blood—the blood of Jesus.
Charles Spurgeon warned, “Morality may keep you out of jail, but only the blood of Jesus can keep you out of hell.” Goodness, apart from Christ, is a mask. It may impress people—but it doesn’t fool God.
Let’s consider the rich young ruler in Matthew 19. Though he was good too—he kept the commandments, lived uprightly, and more—and still lacked eternal life. Why? Because he wouldn’t surrender all to Jesus. Jesus wasn’t after good behavior—He demanded the throne of his heart.
Augustine echoed this when he said, “God is not valued at all until He is valued above all.” Your goodness must be surrendered to His greatness, or it becomes your pride.
Today’s culture celebrates moral independence—“Be a good person in your own way.” But Jesus didn’t say, “Be good.” He said,“Be born again”(John 3:3) and “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind without conforming to this world’s ideals and culture” (Rom 12:2).
Heaven is not for the good—it’s for the redeemed. Where do you stand? Good or Godly?
Remain blessed.

QUESTION TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD
1. Am I trusting in my goodness more than Christ’s grace?
2. Have I been avoiding full surrender because I think I’m “not that bad”?
3. What would repentance look like if I laid down my own righteousness?
PRAYER
Jesus, strip away the lie that I can earn salvation by being good. Let me see my deep need for Your cross and grave, and not my own efforts. I receive forgiveness for trusting in myself more than in You. Make me new—not just better. Your righteousness is my only hope. In Jesus’ precious name. Hallelujah!
