TOPIC: RUNNING IN YOUR OWN LANE

THEME SCRIPTURE: “Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus…” — Hebrews 12:1–2 (NKJV)

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

  1. How can one focus on the pursuit of vision?

Comparison is a silent thief. It drains joy, distorts identity, and derails purpose. When we fixate on others’ pace or platform, we often neglect the unique race God has marked out for us. Hebrews 12 exhorts us to run our race, not someone else’s. That means keeping our eyes on Jesus, not on those ahead of us, behind us, or beside us. As John Chrysostom taught, “The eye that looks to others is easily darkened, but the eye fixed on Christ shines with purpose.”

Peter struggled with comparison after Jesus restored him. When Peter saw John following them, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus responded bluntly: “What is that to you? You follow Me.” (John 21:21–22). Jesus didn’t just redirect Peter’s focus—He corrected his thinking. God doesn’t give copy-paste callings.

Comparison breeds either pride or insecurity. If we feel ahead, we become arrogant. If we feel behind, we grow discouraged. Neither mindset honors God. He crafted your story with intention—your voice, your season, your assignment.

The Apostle Paul ran his race with focus. He said, “I do not run like someone running aimlessly...” (1 Corinthians 9:26). That clarity came from knowing Christ, not competing with others.

You are not in competition with your work colleague, your siblings, the next ministry, the next leader, or even your past self. Your only call is obedience.

Your only audience is Christ. Celebrate others, but stay focused on your lane. Your growth, impact, and timing are all in God’s hands. The goal is not to be better than someone else, but to be faithful with what God entrusted to you.

Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:

  1. Are you focused in this life, or are you troubled by how others are doing well materially?

PRAYER

Lord, free me from the trap of comparison. Help me embrace the race You’ve set before me and run it with faith, endurance, and joy. Let my eyes stay fixed on You, in Jesus’ precious name. Amen!
