TOPIC: LAODICIA: THE DANGER OF LUKEWARM FAITH
THEME SCRIPTURE: “So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.”— Revelation 3:16 (ESV)
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
1. What does it mean to be lukewarm as a Christian?
Laodicea was a prosperous city, but its church reflected more of its wealth than its worship. Self-reliant and spiritually indifferent, they no longer burned with zeal nor chilled with repentance—they had settled into comfort. Jesus’ verdict is jarring: “I will spit you out of my mouth.” The language is not poetic—it’s violent. Christ finds lukewarm faith intolerable.
What does it mean to be lukewarm? It’s not failure or struggle. It’s indifference. It’s religion without passion, belief without pursuit. It’s singing without meaning, praying without listening, reading without trembling.
As Gregory the Great warned, “To be lukewarm is to live with a careless heart, neither fearing judgment nor desiring grace.”
Laodicea thought they had everything, but Christ saw their spiritual poverty. Yeah, He saw their deep poverty, but they didn't know. His counsel: buy from Me gold refined in fire, white garments for your shame, and salve for your blind eyes (Revelation 3:18). In other words: You need what only I can give.
Today, there are too many Christians who, in their quest to find wealth, have grown dull in faith. They are always tired of the things of God yet strong when money calls. They do not remember the last time they won a soul for Christ or shared the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Yet in His mercy, Jesus doesn't slam the door. He knocks. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock” (Rev. 3:20). This is grace on display. Christ doesn’t discard the lukewarm; He invites them back to intimacy.
To the faithful in Christ, hear ye the word of the Lord: If your heart still burns for Christ, let that flame grow. Deepen your devotion. Your fervor is rare and needed. Keep your fire ablaze, your lamps oil-filled, your focus still on Jesus.
To the complacent: If your faith has cooled, don’t excuse it—repent. Christ is not distant; He’s at the door. Open it. Let Him renew your joy, your awe, your purpose. Complacency is not safe; it is soul-dulling. But today can be the day of return. Turn to your Lord and live.
O, our God, quicken us one more time...
He that has an ear, let him hear

1. How much are you on fire for Christ?
PRAYER
I receive forgiveness for growing cold in my love, Eternal Father. I open the door again—come reign in every room of my heart. Quicken me to burn with holy passion. I affirm that my faith is alive, not lukewarm, in Jesus' precious name. Amen
