THEME: THE UNSINKABLE TRUTH OF GRACE
THEME SCRIPTURE: "God saved you by his special favor when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it." Ephesians 2:8-9
PREPARATORY QUESTION
1. Why do we all need the grace of God?
Humans sometimes fall into the trap of invincibility Illusion. Yeah, the Titanic's builders boasted of an "unsinkable" ship—until an iceberg proved otherwise. Their fatal error wasn't engineering pride, but the delusion that human achievement could defy natural law. Likewise, humanity's "double hull" of morality and self-sufficiency cannot withstand the iceberg of God's holiness.
As Jonathan Edwards warned, "You contributed nothing to your salvation except the sin that made it necessary."
While the Titanic sank, the SS California sat idle—its radio operator asleep. This mirrors humanity's peril: drowning in sin while ignoring God's distress signals. Augustine confessed, "I was deafened by the clanking chains of my pride." Our attempts at self-rescue—religion, philanthropy, philosophy—are lifeboats with holes in them.
Beloved, let's consider three myths that shipwreck souls:
First is moral compartmentalization. Like Titanic's "watertight" bulkheads, we assume some sins won't sink us.
Yet "whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles at one point is guilty of all" (Jam 2:10).
Second is navigational arrogance. The Titanic ignored iceberg warnings. Modern man dismisses conscience and Scripture.
But "There is a way that seems right to a man but the end thereof is death" (Prov 14:12).
Third is the captainless voyage.
Postmodernity says, "You're the master of your fate"—but "The heart is deceitful above all things" (Jer 17:9). This is why every man needs the grace of God.
If we all need grace, how does the physics of grace work?
First is the Law of Sin's Weight (Rom 3:23). No human vessel can stay afloat under sin's burden. Puritan Thomas Watson wrote, "The arrow of God's justice flies at every transgressor."
Second is the Buoyancy of Faith (Eph 2:8). Greek "charis" (grace) means "that which affords joy." Unlike Titanic steel, grace lifts effortlessly—because Christ already bore the weight, if only you will believe in Him whom the Father has sent.
When Peter walked on water (Matt 14:29), he demonstrated grace's principle: Divine power transcends natural law. Christ's cry to drowning humanity isn't "Swim harder!" but "Take my hand."
As Charles Spurgeon observed, "Grace finds us beggars but leaves us heirs."
The Titanic's lifeboats sat half-empty. Will you, like proud passengers, cling to sinking pride? Or heed the Captain's call? " Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your heart" (Heb 3:15). Rather, receive His grace.
God bless you.
