TOPIC: THE RIDER ON THE WHITE HORSE
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Then I saw the Lamb open one of the seven seals… and behold, a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer.” (Revelation 6:1-2)
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What is the significance of Gethsemane to believers today?
Now, the Lion of the tribe of Judah has taken the scroll and begins to open the seals thereof. John sees the Lamb who was slain and the Lion of Judah, now exerting His authority in opening the first seal. He sees a white horse, and he who sat on it (Rev 6:2). John’s vision of the first seal unveils a chilling truth: The end times will dawn with deception. The rider, often debated, mirrors Christ’s white horse (Rev 19:11) but lacks His purity. This counterfeit conqueror—a “beast” foretold in Daniel 9:27—parodies divine authority, wielding false peace to seduce nations. His crown (stephanos) is not eternal but a temporary laurel, earned through violence and lies. Nero, the Roman emperor who martyred Christians while masquerading as a savior, foreshadowed this antichrist spirit. His reign, marked by terror disguised as order, mirrors the rider’s mission: conquer through compromise.
Beloved, consider this: The rider’s bow lacks arrows—his power is psychological, not military. He conquers by convincing the world that safety lies in submission to his rule. Modern echoes abound: regimes silencing dissent in the name of unity, leaders trading freedom for fleeting security. C.S. Lewis warned, “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.”
Precious one, what is supposed to be the Church’s response? It is remarkable that when Jesus was asked regarding the signs of His coming and of the end of the age, He first warned, "Take heed that no man deceive you" (Matt 24:4).
As a Church and people of God, we are to test every spirit. “Do not believe every prophecy” (1 John 4:1). Measure leaders by Scripture, not by charisma. In addition, we are to cultivate discernment. Beloved, pray for “eyes to see” (Ephesians 1:18). The martyrs in Revelation “did not love their lives even unto death” (because they saw and understood something superior in God. Then, lastly, we are to hold fast to the true crown. Christ promises, “Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Rev 2:10).
Though the rider advances, his reign is bounded. The Lamb holds the scroll (Rev 5:7)—evil’s timeline is fixed.
Augustine wrote, “The heavenly city outshines Rome, for it is governed by the One who alone is eternal.” For the faithful, tribulation refines; for the wayward, it’s a wake-up call: Return to your Creator’s purpose.
For the Weary: Your labour in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). The Lamb’s final victory is assured. But for the wayward: Flee the rider’s empty promises. As Tertullian pleaded, “The blood of martyrs is seed.” Let their courage stir you to surrender to Him who lives forevermore.
Stand unshaken, beloved—the Rider of Truth is coming soon. “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus, Come!” (Rev 22:20).
