TOPIC: DISCERNING TRUTH IN THE LAST DAYS
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” (1 John 4:1)
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- How are we to test all spirits?
Jesus warned that deception would escalate as His return nears (Matthew 24:11). False prophets peddle spiritual counterfeits—divination, self-made visions, empty promises (Jeremiah 14:14). They dazzle with signs but lack the power to convict sin or transform hearts (Lamentations 2:14). Their goal? To dim the Church’s light before the Bridegroom comes.
In the 4th century, Augustine battled the Pelagian heresy, which denied humanity’s need for grace. He stood firm, determined not to be deterred. Like Augustine, we’re called to “contend for the faith” (Jude 1:3), exposing lies that distort Christ’s sufficiency.
False teachings thrive where Scripture is neglected.
The Bereans were praised for testing Paul’s words against God’s Word (Acts 17:11). Charles Spurgeon urged, “Visit many good books, but live in the Bible.” Anchor your soul in its truths: memorize key verses, study context, and pray for discernment.
When a teaching contradicts God’s nature—holiness, justice, mercy—sound the alarm.
What must we do to stand firm and strong in these last days?
One way is to test the fruits of every message. Does the message glorify Christ or the speaker? (Matthew 7:16).
Further, let’s seek accountability with our Christian lives.
In the early church, communal sharing and discussion of the gospel helped in shaping the way forward regarding circumcision for the Gentiles. Until we are open to sincere discussions regarding thorny and blurred issues, we won’t have the advantage.
Lastly, let us repent and return. If you’ve wandered, confess. God “restores the years the locusts have eaten” (Joel 2:25).
To God’s faithful in these last days, hear this—Though false prophets rise, Christ promises, “My sheep hear My voice… they will never follow a stranger” (John 10:5-27).
The Spirit guards those abiding in Scripture in all humility (John 14:26). Even in error’s shadow, God’s Word remains “a lamp to [your] feet” (Psalm 119:105).
Martin Luther defied falsehoods with Scripture alone: “The Bible is the cradle wherein Christ lies.” As the hour nears, cling to it—not with fear, but fiery hope. The Judge is coming, and His Word will vindicate the faithful. Stand firm.
God bless you

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:
- Are you abiding in Scriptures, or are you abiding in others’ books and schools of thought?
PRAYER
Father, sharpen my spirit with Your Word. Expose every lie masquerading as light. For those entangled by deception, reveal your truth with tender clarity. Keep Your Church unshaken, her eyes fixed on the Daystar dawning. Come, Lord Jesus
