TOPIC: THE SCANDAL OF EMPTY FAITH
THEME SCRIPTURE: “Take away from me the noise of your songs, for I will hear the melody of not your stringed instruments. But let justice run down like water, And righteousness like a mighty stream." Amos 5:23-24 NKJV
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
1. Why was God rejecting the songs and offerings of His people?
When piety masks injustice, our faith becomes empty.
In 2021, a Christian brother exploited his fellow Christian in the faith. Being in the same church, this brother concocted stories to take money from this generous colleague. Yet he was present in church every Sunday, well dressed and very prayerful, mirroring God’s ancient indictment: “I hate your religious festivals… Away with your noisy hymns!… But let justice roll on like a river!” (Amos 5:21-24).
Israel’s rituals, divorced from righteousness, disgusted God. So does performative piety today.
But the heart of true worship is a delight to God. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, executed for resisting the Nazis, warned against “cheap grace”—faith that absolves sin but ignores suffering. God’s character is profaned when we reduce Christianity to rituals while ignoring systemic oppression. “What does the Lord require? To act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly” (Micah 6:8).
The God who “defends the fatherless and the widow” (Deut 10:18) demands His people do the same.
Precious one, if we are going to be practical with our faith, so that injustice does not perpetuate, or that we do not contribute to the injustice around us, we must first audit our influence. Who benefits from your power, beloved? Who suffers from your power and position? Or, who is it in your power to help, but you have withheld? Furthermore, we will need to amplify silenced voices. Lastly, we will need to repent of complicity. Let us give sacrificially to dismantle inequity.
God’s rebuke to Israel is a gift: He refuses to let us settle for a hollow faith. Your worship is measured not by Sunday attendance but by Monday mercy.
Today, ask: Does my faith comfort the oppressed—or the oppressor?
Remain blessed
