TOPIC: JESUS: THE BREAD OF LIFE

THEME SCRIPTURE: “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” – John 6:35

PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:

  1. Who is the Bread of Life?
  2. What does the Bread of Life offer?

In 2015, several countries came together to adopt and implement a set of goals to be achieved by 2030. These goals are what are commonly referred to as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There Are seventeen of them cutting across all phases of human life. Two of them, SDG2 and SDG12, bother on ensuring global food security by that time. The importance of food to human life cannot be over-emphasized, it is a global concern. This is why Jesus saw the multitude and He was moved with compassion. He took five loaves of bread and two fishes. Multiplying them, He fed 5000 followers. How glad these 5,000 men were, having eaten to the full and afterwards gathered 12 baskets full of fragments.

Since they ate freely and were full, the following day these 5000 men sought for Jesus. He wasn’t around. Upon finding Jesus, He pointed it out to them, “You seek me, not because you saw the miracles, but because you did eat of the loaves and were filled” (John 6:26). Jesus went further to admonish them, “Do not labour for the bread that perishes but the bread which endures unto everlasting life…” (John 6:27).

The critical question here is this - which type of bread is this that can endure unto everlasting life, and where can I get it?

Beloved, in the wilderness, the children of Israel ate manna from above and yet they died (John 6:31). Death encapsulates everything contrary to a superior life including misery, affliction, sickness, etc. Even though manna was rained from above, it was not the true bread. The true bread, which is the bread of God, is the one who came down from heaven and gives life to the world (John 6:33).

Jesus is pointing out to us that the bread of life, God’s true bread, is a person, not a product.

Who is this person?

The Jews, upon hearing this, were moved to get this bread of life. They asked Jesus for this bread - Lord, evermore give us this bread (which is superior to manna). There, Jesus revealed, “I am the bread of life: he that comes to me shall never hunger…” (John 6:35). Meaning, Jesus is that bread that can satisfy the human spirit. The one who believes and comes to Him shall never hunger (or find emptiness within).

Are you restless in your soul and empty deep within, turn to the bread of life and you will be filled.

Beloved, have you been brought to the table of God and served with this bread of life? Have you taken a bite of the bread of life? It is free; don’t stop eating this bread. The devil may try to entice and ensure you are so much preoccupied with the pursuit of physical bread at the detriment of the Bread of Life, but never forget that Jesus “…came that they may have life and have it abundantly – John 10:10.” Hallelujah!
