TOPIC: O, MAN – THE SOCIAL BEING
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”– Genesis 2:18
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Why was it that at all cost man needed an helper?
It is interesting to note that when God surveyed everything that He had made one after the other, He concluded that it was very good (Gen 1:31) and then He looked at man and asserted that it is not good for him to be alone. Further, man was God’s masterpiece such that you will expect that he is capable of enduring and handling anything. However, when it came to being alone, man was found to be in the disadvantage. Why?
Yeah, the first time God mentioned that something was not good it had to do with man’s sense of isolation and his inability to communicate and relate.
Even though Adam [the man of the ground] was created from the dust of the earth as all the other animals, there was no way he could relate with them. All the animals had their mate, not merely for procreation but communication and bearing with one another. Yet Adam had no one.
We shouldn’t be surprised at what Adam said when he saw Eve—this is NOW bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. Man was created to be a social being. Adam might have seen different types of animal flesh and bones [all from the dust of the earth] yet none was like his until Eve came. Even among men, there are times you travel and get excited to meet someone who speaks your native language or is your countryman. The fact that we can communicate in our native language alone brings joy.
“Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity” (Psa 133:1).
Precious one, on the other hand, is it not the case that the God of creation is a triune God? “In the beginning God [Elohim, Gods—the plural form of El] created the heaven and the earth” (Gen 1:1). Such that the ‘one God’ has related with Himself in three dimensions from eternity past—“And God said, Let US make man in our image and after our likeness…” (Gen 1:26). It is clear throughout scripture that God will not do anything unless he first speaks of it and then He acts. “Surely, the Lord God will do nothing, but he reveals his secret unto His servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7). If God, the creator relates, then the man who was created in His image has the capacity to relate.
Beloved, two is better than one because they have a good reward for their effort and threefold cords cannot easily be broken.
There is a type of Christianity that makes good Christians live isolated lives. As though they were the only ones Christ died for. That Christianity is not original. There are also some Christians who are afraid to relate in the church, community and the workplace. Their philosophy is that they don’t want to get into trouble. They walk alone; always skeptical about everyone. But precious one, when God gave us salvation, He could have carried us off the earth from this crooked place. Yet He asked us to be here, in this world, even though we are not of it. The reason is that God has placed something in us such that through relationship we can influence and affect the world positively. Christians who do not relate will not be able to impact lives, even though God has endowed them with graces to do so. From time-to-time God brings people our way so they can experience the love of God through us. Others come our way to be the solution we are looking for. Never be afraid of wicked men and neither let the fear of them stop you from relating with others. In you is a Light and anytime that Light shines in darkness, darkness is unable to comprehend Him. Declare that this year you are going to impact lives through the relationships God brings your way. In all you do, and in all your relationships, beloved, let unfeigned love be the core of them. Remain blessed.
