TOPIC: O, MAN – THE PRACTICAL WORKER
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.”– Genesis 2:7
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Did God intend that man should work??
O man, you who were created in the image of God and after His likeness, has been designed for practical living.
This masterpiece of God has been designed to function purposefully. God’s idea was not that man will sit idle and be a consumer, but to be fruitful, multiply what God has already provided him. He was to replenish that which was depleting and dominate God’s creation (Gen 1:28). Man was designed to work.
At one point, when God had not created man, He withheld the rains of heaven. “…For the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground” (Gen 2:5). In other words, because there was no capacity, God’s provision was suspended. Man, God’s masterpiece, was the required capacity to till the ground and to keep [maintain] it. Isn’t this remarkable?
God [the creator] worked and rested. Man has no excuse but to work like his maker.
Interestingly, work has become drudgery for many people. But work was not intended by God to be so because where there is purpose there’s passion, and passion is the panacea for drudgery. In God’s created order, man is to work purposely and to rest adequately.
Precious one, post-modern work lifestyle has become horrible because it makes no room for rest. It has been designed to the disadvantage of our spiritual life, family life and social life. Though work must be purposeful, the worker must be practical. There are some people who are round pegs and trying to fit in a square hole. They are simply not cut for the work they are in, or looking for. Such people go to work for the mere sake of the salary. Hence, they always have headaches and almost all clients hardly appreciate their efforts. They are not making impact but meeting targets.
However, we work because as God’s masterpiece, we carry value and we are to give this value to others through relationships [work, family, business, church relationships, etc.].
This year, beloved, be poised to work diligently. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might (Eccl 9:10). Not just any work but purpose driven work that draws your passion and guarantees your impact. Scripture enjoins us to do every work heartily, as unto the Lord and not men (Col 3:23). If you have no passion for what you do, don’t stress yourself—move on!
Beloved, let no one deceive you, rest goes with work. “And He [God] rested on the seventh day from all His work” (Gen 2:2). God Himself rested, not because He got tired. Rather, He ceased from his creation work and God might have focused on other things. We must therefore learn to cease from work to be with family. We must take a break to tune up our spiritual relationship with God. Yeah, we must! So, declare that this year going forward, you are working purposefully and diligently, but also seeking rest to be with your God, family and loved ones. Remain blessed.
