TOPIC: LIVING IN AN IMPERMANENT WORLD
THEME SCRIPTURE: Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away. – Luke 21:33
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- How are we to live on this earth, which has an end?
When it came to the point where Jesus had to speak concerning the signs of the end, He wove them together with the end of the Jerusalem temple. He used the opportunity to discuss the destruction of two temples—the temple in Jerusalem and His body. What seems very interesting is that at the time that Jesus was prophesying the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem, it had been under construction for 46 years and was not complete.
Beloved, the temple in Jerusalem, when it was completed was an epitome of grandeur, magnificence and security to the Jews at that time.
This temple was four football fields wide and five football fields long. This temple was made of pure marble cut into columns, with some columns as high as 45 feet. One side of its wall was of solid gold, a blinding sight in the sunshine. It was difficult to believe that this temple would be destroyed. In AD 70, seven years after its completion, this temple was destroyed. The other temple, Jesus’ body, was also destroyed in less than a week.
Precious one, when you consider all the warnings given to us regarding the end of the age and the cosmos, there is one underlying message we must not lose sight of—everything in life is impermanent except God’s word (Luke 21:33). Truly, there’s nothing around us that is permanent except the word of God passed on to us through the ages. Then comes this question: “How are we to live in this world where everything, except one, is impermanent?”
It can be tempting to want to monitor the events of the age and calculate the seasons to ascertain the end of the age.
Many people have attempted that but they merely conjectured to their dismay. It is a waste of time and precious life to monitor and evaluate world events to beat the timing of the end. However, Jesus offered us how to live in this impermanent world. He tells us instead to watch and pray. We are to watch and pray so that we will be guided to live in conformity with the word of God. There is nothing we own that we can possess to the end except our souls. This is why you can’t afford to neglect prayer.
Watch and pray in this impermanent world because that is the only way we can be alert to the wiles of the enemy in the last days.
The enemy is employing the same old tricks but in different forms and shapes. It is important that we watch and pray with all kinds of prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving to God. Watch and pray, because the wisdom to live circumspectly in the last days can only come from above. There has been no shortage of false prophets since the day Jesus spoke of the end of the age. In every generation, there seems to arise a false messiah. So then, watch. Watch what you hear and how you hear. Had Eve not spent time listening to the devil, she wouldn’t have been deceived. Precious one, watch and pray because all things are coming to an end. Remain blessed.
