TOPIC: SEEKING GOD’S GUIDANCE
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And He said, I am God, the God of your father; fear not to go down into Egypt ; for I will there make of you a great nation’” – Genesis 46:3
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- Why did God had to assure Jacob to go to Egypt?
Remember, God had told Abraham that his descendants would be in Egypt for 400 years. Abraham died at 175 (Gen 25:7-8). Isaac is gone too. Jacob is now old, and surprisingly, his beloved son Joseph is alive in Egypt. He had mourned for the death of Joseph, and it turned out that he did not die. However, there is severe famine, and everyone is looking to Egypt for corn (Gen 42:2). Jacob's discovery that his son, whom he thought was dead, was the governor in charge of Egypt’s corn, was a miracle.
Could it be that God sent Joseph to Egypt to save Jacob and his family and He had been working it out all this while?
Finally, Joseph has requested that his father [Jacob] and all his family relocate to Egypt to be nourished. Jacob worried about leaving the promise land. God had told him to be in the land of Canaan because He had bequeathed it to Abraham and his descendants. Is it God’s will that he should relocate to Egypt? What will happen to the promises of God for the descendants of Abraham? Will it be well with him and his family in Egypt? Jacob had a lot of concerns to address.
Jacob took his journey, but first things first- he went straight to Beersheba to worship. He offered sacrifices to God. Then God spoke to him that night and encouraged him (Gen 46:2). God assured him that it was okay to go to Egypt because it was in His plan. In Egypt, God had planned to make Jacob’s descendants a great nation and also fulfil the word he spoke to Abraham: “Your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them, and they shall afflict them four hundred years” (Gen 15:13).
In making a major decision in his life, Jacob took time to involve and also hear from God.
Precious one, how do you involve God in your decision-making processes. Many of God’s children complain that when they pray to God, they do not hear Him answer, and it lingers on. So they better mind their business. Man can grope in the dark with forecasts, but a life of precision, only God can engineer it. No wonder retired London School of Economics academic Minnie Louise Haskins’ famous lines on “the gate of the year” have been used at royal occasions, from George VI’s 1939 Christmas eve broadcast to the funeral of Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, in 2002. It says, “And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: give me light that I may tread safely into the unknown. He said, go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way. So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night. And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.”
Beloved, seek the God who guides. Hear his voice and follow His steps. Then will your path shine brighter and brighter unto the perfect day. Remain blessed.
