TOPIC: WHAT DOES GOD REQUIRE OF YOU? - PT2
THEME SCRIPTURE: “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I am commanding you today for your good?” – Deuteronomy 10:12-13
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What does it mean to walk in God’s ways?
Imagine a world where the apparent majority identifying as Christians are truly regenerated or have genuinely experienced the new birth. Consider the indescribable joy the disciples experienced in Antioch when they were initially recognized as deserving of a title rooted in Christ, their Lord and Master (Acts 11:26). Evidently, their adherence to Christ wasn't merely a matter of thought or proclamation; rather, their way of life mirrored their confessions.
Their conduct harmonized so seamlessly with their character that the community at Antioch was compelled to confer upon them the novel name Christians.
Continuing our exploration of God's expectations for His children, today's focus will be on the passage: "And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you… but to walk in all his ways...?" Among the numerous nations of that era, Israel was specifically selected by God to be His special people. For Israel, the laws and commands from God were the embodiment of God's ways. It wasn't sufficient for Israel to possess a plethora of divine laws; their responsibility was to ensure that these laws, which represented God's ways, were reflected in both their personal and communal lives.
The distinction of Israel, chosen and set apart from other nations, was embedded within their laws and their lifestyle.
Dearly beloved in Christ, the significance of walking in line with God's ways cannot be over-emphasized, as it lies at the very heart of Christianity. Throughout scriptures, there exists a profound emphasis on the imperative for God's followers to faithfully imitate Christ Jesus. The noble charge of the Christian, as a royal priesthood, is incomplete if you fail to embody the virtues of the One who summoned you from darkness into His wondrous light.
It is the Christian's divine duty to radiate Christ through his actions and his words, lighting up our dark world.
Have you earnestly drenched yourself in God's teachings as laid out in the Bible so you can walk them? How profoundly has the Word of God impacted your life so that your life can impact the world? Your way of life will unmistakably mirror God's precepts if you diligently immerse yourself in His Word. The name and honor of being a Christian have been handed down through generations to you.
Will you, as one who bears this name, resolve to faithfully emulate the ways of Jesus in both your private life and within your community, all to the glorious honor of God?
