TOPIC: THIS IS THE BREAD OF GOD
THEME SCRIPTURE: “For the bread of God is he which comes down from heaven, and gives life to the world.” – John 6:33
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What did John mean by the bread of God?
- Who is the bread of God?
In Jesus’ days, many people followed Him, and He had compassion on them. Jesus fed these followers at one time (John 6:5) with five loaves and two fish (John 6:9). The multitude marvelled at this miracle. Professing that Jesus is the prophet to come (Deut 18:18), they desired to make Jesus their king by force (John 6:15). How easy it is for us to surrender to those things that make our bellies full. We hail those things and make them rule our lives. Many more people have died looking for money than have found it. Jesus then points it out to them, “You seek me not because of the miracle but because you did eat of the loaves and were filled” (John 6:26). Their intention was simply this: “If we can make Him our king, we won’t need to work; we can eat every day.”
How sad it is that most people live, not for a superior purpose, but so they can always have bread to eat.
"Labour not for the bread which is perishable, but rather for the bread which endures unto eternal life, which the Son of man shall give unto you…”, Jesus admonished the multitude (John 6:27).
Beloved, there is bread and there is BREAD. Before the start of the French Revolution, there were so many things the populace was not happy about. However, when food shortages ravaged the country and there was a low supply of bread due to a poor harvest, the French people couldn’t take it anymore. The Revolution then kicked off. Precious one, food is for the belly, and the belly is for food. But God will destroy both of them (1 Cor 6:13). The children of Israel ate manna in the wilderness, yet they died (John 6:49). But there is a bread, which if anyone eats, he shall not die (John 6:50).
What kind of bread is this, and where is it?
This bread is no ordinary bread but “the bread of God who came down from heaven, and gives life to the world” (John 6:33). This bread of God is a Person. The reason we work and chase bread is that we think that through food we can sustain life. To quench hunger, we seek food. Yet we die, both physically and spiritually. But the true hungers of life are the hunger to survive, the hunger for God, recognition, power, love, etc., and only the bread of God is able to satisfy our true hunger and also give us life. O, that you will also say today, “Lord, evermore give me this bread” (John 6:34). This bread is Jesus (John 6:51).
If any man eats of Jesus, he shall live forever. Do you believe this?
As the Father has life in Himself, so has He given unto the Son [Jesus] to have life in Himself and to give life to whomever He wills. Are you in need of a fresh start or a new life? Turn to Jesus. Are you crushing under the burden of addiction? Turn to Jesus. Are you asking yourself, “Is there meaning for my life?” Turn to Him who came down from heaven, Jesus. No one loves you more than Jesus. No one knows you better than Him. He is the only one who can exalt you without flattering you. No one ascribes true and highest value to your person but Jesus. He alone can unchain you from your hunger and set you free from your burdens. All you ever needed in this life was Jesus, the bread of God. Come to Him, and you will have life and have it to the full. Glory to God!
