TOPIC: GOD IS OUR REFUGE AND STRENGTH
THEME SCRIPTURE: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea.” – Psalm 46:1-2
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- What does it mean for God to be our refuge and strength?
The current state of affairs in our world indicates a profound abnormality. It appears that everything has been flipped upside down. Everything negative and bad has repeatedly overshadowed the forces of good. We find ourselves dwelling in a world system where those who are advocates of righteousness in their bid to uphold how God made things have become a marginalized minority. Christians across the globe endure various forms of persecution. There is a clear indication that Satan with his forces opposing righteousness will persist in exerting their influence on the world and its systems, intensifying the persecution faced by Christians.
There is every indication that the happenings in our world demand that Christians hold on to what we believe.
Psalm 46 is an encouragement for Christians in a troubled world. It highlights the various assaults against God’s people in this present world. “…even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah – verses 2 and 3.” This confirms the various troubles of the wicked in the world. It affirms the chaos the enemy causes to the world to distort how God made things. The world is deliberate in its attempt to ensure there is no God. It is deliberate in ensuring that everything relating to the Bible is taken out of the educational system. Amid these persecutions, the Psalmist reminds us of the unwavering faithfulness of our God. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear.” What a blessed assurance that should gladden our hearts. It emphasizes God’s ever-present protection of his church from all forms of assaults. He goes on to assure his people that no matter the extent to which the world roars, we should “Be still, and know that I am God” and that he “will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” He remains God. Hallelujah!
Beloved in Christ, we must consistently display courage by proclaiming God's word, emphasizing His holiness and our responsibility to live in alignment with His holiness.
We should fearlessly remind the world of God's teachings regarding human sexual orientation. Our evangelism should boldly declare God's love for all humanity and not shy away from the realities of His fierce judgment and wrath. We must be prepared to defend the truth and openly oppose any falsehoods that have infiltrated the Church. We must shed light on anything that contradicts Biblical truth and rationality, so that the world may understand God's perspective on these matters. We cannot passively stand by while the truth is on trial in the public square. It is our responsibility to boldly proclaim God's word as its defender, ensuring that God’s truth is upheld in matters of life and human existence. In upholding the Biblical truth amid fanatical attacks against the Church, may we sing along with Martin Luther: “A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing? Our Helper He amidst the flood, of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe, doth seek to work us woe. His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate. On earth is not his equal.”
