TOPIC: THE DISCIPLINE OF FAMILY DEVOTION
THEME SCRIPTURE: “You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” – Deuteronomy 6:7
PREPARATORY QUESTIONS:
- How can we teach our children and family members God’s word?
- How well have you filled your heart with the word of God?
Responsible parents provide everything their children need to succeed and not burden society. For their children's future, many leave inheritances. Christian parents must teach their children and household to follow God's path as a sure way to help kids succeed. The cares of this life—what to eat, clothe, and where to sleep—have taken center stage, making us forget that the best inheritance one can leave their children is to teach them God's ways. God chose Abraham because He was sure “that he will command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him” (Gen 18:19).
The best way to raise godly children as Christian parents and guardians is to prioritize our family's spiritual growth to ensure they follow God's ways.
In Deuteronomy 6, God gives Israel instructions through Moses. He reminds them to love God unwaveringly. He reminds them to always revere him as the only God. He tells his children to keep these commands in their hearts. He then instructs them, "teach them diligently to your children" to ensure godly generations. Deliberately teaching the Bible is the only way to raise godly children. It's the only way to keep future generations on God's path. God indicates discussing his commands and words "when you sit in your house... and when you lie down, and when you rise."
In essence, he commands that his words be made an important part of family life. This was to prevent a godless generation in Israel. It was to preserve a godly heritage by passing down God's words.
Beloved, some Christian families have neglected the discipline of discussing and making God's word an important part of their lives. Today's world wants to remove Christ Jesus from society and, by extension, our children. The educational system excludes the principles of God, for instance. The system wants our children to forget God. It will be unfortunate to support this kind of narrative.
Beloved in Christ, revive the family altar by being deliberate and consistent with family devotion.
This is the only way to keep our children and their children on God's path. We cannot leave family devotion to chance, nor can it be done haphazardly. We can't trust society or the education system to teach our children the ways of God. As a Christian parent or guardian, teaching your children the Bible is part of standing for Christ. God bless all parents who are intentional about family devotions, and if you've neglected this most important discipline, please commit to keeping the family altar alive in Christ Jesus. God bless you.
