TOPIC: WHEN SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING LAGS

THEME SCRIPTURE: “How can this be, Nicodemus?” — John 3:9

PREPARATORY QUESTION

  1. What do you do when your questions about God remain unanswered?

Nicodemus asks Jesus again, “How can this be?” It is a simple question, but it carries weight. He has heard Jesus’ words, considered them, and still cannot reconcile them with what he knows. His response is not dismissal— it is tension.

There is a kind of faith that assumes clarity must come first. That, once something is explained well enough, belief will follow naturally. But this moment challenges that assumption. Nicodemus is informed, thoughtful, and sincere—yet still uncertain.

Questions are not the problem. They often mark the boundary between what you know and what you are being invited to trust. The issue is not that Nicodemus asks “how,” but what he does next. Will he stay engaged, or will he retreat into what feels safer and more certain?

You will encounter moments where God’s word does not fully resolve in your understanding. You may ask for explanations and receive direction instead. You may seek clarity and be given an invitation to trust.

This can feel unsatisfying, especially if you value reasoning and structure. But not everything in spiritual life is meant to be mastered before it is lived. Some things become clearer only as you walk them out.

Nicodemus’ question remains open in this moment. Jesus does not immediately reduce the mystery to something easily digestible. Instead, He continues to unfold truth in a way that requires both attention and trust.

You do not need to silence your questions, beloved. But you also cannot allow them to become barriers. There is a difference between asking in order to grow and asking as a way to delay response.

Key Takeaway

Unanswered questions do not prevent growth unless they stop you from moving forward.

Precious one, you may have unanswered questions. Keep walking with God. At some point in your walk with Christ, movement matters more than complete understanding. Stay focused on Him; stay dependable.

Remain blessed.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD

  1. What unresolved questions are you currently holding about your faith?
  2. Are your questions drawing you closer to God or keeping you at a distance?
  3. What step can you take even without full clarity?

PRAYER

God, You see the questions I carry. Help me not to let uncertainty hold me back from following You. Teach me to trust even when I do not fully understand. Give me the courage to keep moving forward, knowing that clarity often comes along the way. Guide me in truth as I walk with You. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
